Short answer: cashing out crypto to a US bank account takes anywhere from about 30 minutes to around 10 calendar days. The sale itself is almost instant. The wait comes from three places: moving coins onto the exchange, security holds and the bank transfer rail you pick. Choose an instant cashout to a bank that supports it and you can have cash the same day. Choose a standard ACH transfer over a weekend or holiday and it can take more than a week.
The five stages of a cash out
Every cash out runs through the same stages. Knowing which one you are stuck in tells you how long to wait.
| Stage | What happens | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Setup (first time only) | Identity check and linking a bank account in your own name | Minutes to a few days |
| 2. Deposit (only if coins sit in your own wallet) | Send Bitcoin to the exchange and wait for confirmations | About 45 minutes at Kraken |
| 3. Sell | Trade crypto for dollars | Seconds |
| 4. Hold check | Security or recent funding holds | None to 7 days |
| 5. Bank transfer | ACH, wire or instant payment to your bank | About 30 minutes to 5 business days |
If your coins already sit on the exchange and you have cashed out there before you skip stages 1 and 2.
Stage 1: First-time setup
The first cash out always takes longest. You need a verified account and a bank account in the same legal name. CEX.IO University notes that verification can take minutes for a basic check or a few days for higher limits. Platforms also reject transfers to someone else's bank account.
Stage 2: Moving coins onto the exchange
If your Bitcoin lives in a hardware or app wallet you have to send it to the exchange first. Exchanges wait for blockchain confirmations before they credit a deposit so a payment cannot be reversed. Kraken says it credits Bitcoin deposits after three confirmations, which takes about 45 minutes.
Two rules save you hours here:
- Send a small test first. Confirm it lands, then send the rest.
- Match the exact asset and network. A deposit sent the wrong way may never show up. See what happens if you send crypto to the wrong address before you hit send.
Stage 3: Selling
A market sell fills in seconds. A limit order waits for your price. Watch the fee instead. Our guide to maker and taker fees in crypto shows how to keep more of each sale.
Stage 4: Holds that freeze your money
This is the stage that surprises people most. Exchanges hold funds that came in through payment methods that can still be reversed.
Kraken's cash withdrawal page (updated October 30, 2026) says ACH, PayPal, card and digital wallet purchases trigger a temporary 72-hour withdrawal hold. Cash deposited through ACH Plaid is held from withdrawal for 7 days. Those holds apply to both crypto and cash withdrawals.
So if you bought with a bank transfer on Monday and sell on Tuesday you may not be able to withdraw until next week.
Stage 5: The bank transfer
This is where your choice matters most. Here are real 2026 numbers from Coinbase and Kraken help pages for US customers.
| Platform and method | Typical time | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase ACH | 3 to 5 business days | Varies by app. No fee on Coinbase Exchange | Can stretch to 7 to 10 calendar days |
| Coinbase wire | 1 to 3 business days | Shown before you confirm | Best for large amounts |
| Coinbase instant bank cashout | About 30 minutes, up to 24 hours | Shown before you confirm | Bank must support RTP. $100,000 per transaction limit |
| Kraken ACH | 0 to 2 business days | Free | 2 PM ET cutoff |
| Kraken FedWire | 0 to 1 business days | $4 | $20 minimum |
| Kraken RTP | Near-instant | 1.5% (max $50) | Your bank must support RTP |
Sources: Coinbase payment methods, Coinbase Exchange ACH, Coinbase instant cashouts and Kraken cash withdrawals. Fees and times change so check the withdrawal screen before you confirm.
RTP stands for Real-Time Payments. It is a US network that moves money in seconds, but only if your bank is on it. Kraken says plainly that it cannot turn RTP on for you. Your bank has to support it.
Why weekends and holidays add days
ACH and wires only move on business days. Coinbase explains that if you sell in the evening the ACH transfer does not start until the next business day.
Here is a worked example. You sell Bitcoin on Coinbase at 8 PM ET on a Friday and pick standard ACH. The transfer starts Monday. At 3 to 5 business days the cash lands between Thursday and the following Monday. That is up to 10 calendar days for a sale that took seconds.
Holidays push it further. The Federal Reserve holiday schedule closes the ACH and wire systems on Veterans Day (Wednesday November 11, 2026) and Thanksgiving (Thursday November 26, 2026). If you need cash before the holidays start the transfer early in the week.
Taxes: the part that comes later
Cashing out is usually a taxable sale. The IRS treats crypto as property so you owe tax on any gain. Starting with 2025 sales, US brokers send Form 1099-DA. The IRS Form 1099-DA instructions say that for sales after 2025 brokers must report gross proceeds on all digital assets and cost basis on covered assets.
Coinbase explains that covered assets are ones bought on or after January 1, 2026 and held on the same exchange until sold. For coins bought earlier or moved in from another wallet you track the cost basis yourself. If you are holding and not selling yet see do you pay taxes on crypto if you don't sell.

Red flag: a "fee" to release your withdrawal
A real exchange takes its fee out of the withdrawal. It never asks you to send more money first. If a site says you must pay a tax or unlock fee before you can withdraw, stop. That is a classic sign of a fake platform. Our list of crypto scams to avoid shows how these setups work.
Checklist: how to cash out faster
- Verify your account and a bank in your own name early. Name mismatches get rejected.
- Keep coins you plan to sell soon on the exchange. You skip deposit confirmations. Weigh that against the safety tips in how to keep crypto safe.
- Send a test deposit first. Small amount, then the rest.
- Check for holds. Recent ACH or card buys can lock withdrawals for 72 hours or more.
- Pick the rail that fits. Instant or RTP for speed. ACH for free. Wire for large sums.
- Beat the cutoff. Start before the daily cutoff and avoid Fridays and holidays.
- Save your records. Every sale ends up on your tax return.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to cash out crypto to a bank account?
Between about 30 minutes and roughly 10 calendar days. Instant cashouts to an RTP-enabled bank are fastest. Standard ACH is slowest at 3 to 5 business days on Coinbase or 0 to 2 business days on Kraken.
Why is my crypto withdrawal taking so long?
The most common reasons are a security hold on recent deposits, a weekend or bank holiday, an evening sale that starts processing the next business day or a bank that does not support instant payments.
Can I cash out crypto instantly?
Often yes for smaller amounts. Coinbase instant bank cashouts usually take about 30 minutes and allow up to $100,000 per transaction. Kraken offers near-instant RTP withdrawals for a 1.5% fee capped at $50. Your bank must support RTP.
How long does it take to cash out Bitcoin from a wallet?
Add the deposit time to the bank transfer time. Kraken credits Bitcoin deposits after three confirmations, which takes about 45 minutes. Then the sale is instant and the bank transfer takes from minutes to days.
Do crypto withdrawals go through on weekends?
The sale does but ACH and wire transfers only move on business days. A Friday night ACH request usually starts on Monday.
Do I pay taxes when I cash out crypto?
Usually yes if you sold for a gain. Brokers report 2026 sales on Form 1099-DA, including cost basis for covered assets bought on or after January 1, 2026.
What is the fastest way to cash out crypto?
Keep the coins on a verified exchange, sell with a market order and use an instant cashout to an RTP-enabled bank account during business hours.
The bottom line
Cashing out crypto is fast to start and slow to finish. The days come from confirmations, holds and the bank rail. Set up your account early, watch for holds, pick instant or RTP when speed matters and keep clean records for tax time.
